the janky mess that is splatoon 1

i was pretty late to the wii u. looking back it's a failed nintendo console and yet this is where its new big ip started. i hadn't gotten a wii u yet but i had kept up with all the information leading up to it's release. i watched the splatoon direct a dozen times, showing it to everyone i knew and explaining why the game was such an amazing concept. it was so exciting when i was gifted a wii u with splatoon a little bit after its release. i was obsessed. i made sure no one would bother me whenever a splatfest happened- it drove my mom mad. i'd sneak out of my room at night to go play in the front room for hours. i played a bunch of ranked but of course it was a mess. after a while everyone started running damage up or quick respawn and i found my niche with the beloved grim range blaster. burst blast combos were peak and of course there was no jump spread, plus the design is sick. i had already played regular range for so long due to it's crazy kit including kraken. my hiatus from the series

i'll be honest, i didn't really play s2 as much. i played a bunch in the first year and in the final version, but that was it really. i had a rough falling out with the friends i had made originally playing the game so i felt kinda icky playing it. still, i enjoyed splatoon nonetheless- even though ranked became absolute hell in the later stages after the release of the kensa weapons. their concepts became way too powerful and tenta missles and sting ray made it honestly miserable, but the good memories i have i hold dear- even if they killed blasters :/ idk, i don't have much to say on splatoon 2. i wish i had played it more but i just had a rough association with it. here we are... (july 2023)

i want to love splatoon 3 so bad. the kits feel fluid, the game itself is charming and feels polished, and the new weapon types are super fun. the maps are sadly miserable though, and the update schedule is painful. in splatoon 1 and 2 we got new weapons early on all the time, and with splatoon only really planning 2 years of updates, there's no way any of the weapons are even going to get more than 2 kits. i have a new friend group i play splatoon with, and i love it- the new things can really make the game super charming but there's so much to improve on. maybe i'll update this at some point, maybe it'll make me happy. maybe i'll see splatoon 3 and feel like the map/modes aren't miserable and that it's full release worked out, only time will tell.
